Thomas Greenshields Leadbetter was born on 21 October 1859, the son of James Greenshields Leadbetter (1827-1897) of Stobieside, Lanarkshire and Margaret Macpherson, daughter of Hugh Macpherson of Blantyreferme. The Leadbetters were Glasgow merchants and metal workers. Comes with two letters dated 1916 to Leadbetter from Sir Nathaniel Dunlop (1830-1919) who was a 19th-century British businessman, shipowner and philanthropist, linked to the Allan Steamship Line. He was the longest serving Chairman of the Clyde Navigation Trust. He was also the first Scottish Chairman of the Chamber of Shipping of the United Kingdom
