The Absent-Minded Beggar by Rudyard Kipling 1899

The Absent-Minded Beggar by Rudyard Kipling 1899. Beautiful printed silk souvenir presented by Lillie Langtry at The Garrick Theatre. A folding souvenir theatre programme printed in green and sepia on silk, that was "presented by Mrs Langtry on the occasion of the 100th performance of Sydney Grundy's "The Degenerates" at the Garrick Theatre, London on Friday 24th October 1899", this was actually not a theatre programme as such, but a souvenir presented to mark this event. Lillie Langtry, who was presenting the play as part of her season at the theatre and who was playing Mrs Trevelyan in the production, recited Kipling's poem "the absent-minded beggar" from the stage after the final curtain, and presented every audience member with one of these souvenirs. She also donated £100 to the Daily Mail fund for the wives and children of the reservists fighting in South Africa - the second Boer War having broken out a few days before on October 7th. Published by the Daily Mail and printed by Eyre & Spottiswoode, their logo printed on the reverse, folds out to large size of 23" x 12"
