BEATRIX POTTER - RARE AUTOGRAPH LETTER signed with her married name 'Beatrix Heelis' dated…

BEATRIX POTTER - RARE AUTOGRAPH LETTER signed with her married name 'Beatrix Heelis' dated Hill Top Farm, Sawrey, October 28th 1913, 2pp 8vo, very slight foxing but clearly legible. To 'Dear Mrs Martin', enquiring how much her correspondent had paid for their 'bungalow' '…we are very comfortable here but it is too hard work for the farm woman for any length of time & the cottage is so far off ready - I thought I could manage at the bungalow for a fortnight or so to help the time on. It is a nice little house but rather plain in winter…' This letter was written a fortnight after Beatrix married William Heelis, so this must be one of the first letters she wrote under her married name. Immediately after her marriage, she and William went to live at Sawrey, in the Lake District, staying initially at nearby Castle Cottage, though this letter suggests that by October 28th they had moved into Hill Top Farm - which is now preserved by the National Trust as a museum to her memory. Letters of Beatrix Potter are rare and most sought after on the market
