India – Mahatma Gandhi – Collection of Hand Written Letters - a great collection of 1940s letters written on a personal note to the vendor’s grandfather from Gandhi – Sailendra entered Gandhiji’s Ashram in Wardha (Maharastra, India) in late 1930 when he was just a teenager, following the path of his father who was a freedom fighter. At an early age Sailendra had adopted the Gandhian values and carried out daily routines as per instructions. Gandhiji took personal care of his health and gave him specific instruction for improvement. This instruction for improvement also included Sailendra’s level of English which according to Gandhi required improvement and often corrected by Gandhiji. Sailendra’s younger sister Abha joined Gandhiji’s ashram and spent her entire life working in Sabarmati Ashram (Gujarat, India) and later was looking after Rashtriya Shala in Rajkot, Gujarat. She then married Gandhiji’s grand-nephew and personal photographer Kanu Gandhi. Obviously close to Gandhiji she was by his side at the time of his assassination. The correspondence exchanged between Sailendra and Mahatma Gandhi are personal and relate to the concern for Sailendra’s family’s welfare, together with Sailendra’s English, his personal health and regarding Abha’s decision to marry in one letter. The collection consist of 8x Letters in English, 3x Letters in Hindi, 3x Postcards in English and 2x postcards in Hindi dated between 1940 and 1947 – many of the correspondence have English notes attached to them and are headed ‘Sevagram Wardha, C. P.’ the condition is mixed with few poorer examples, most if not all the English correspondence is signed ‘Bapu’ and the text appears to be very good in many cases.
