Scarce 1908 London Olympic Games Great Britain competitors cloth badge worn by Emil Voigt five miles gold medal winner, embroidered with all 4 nations emblems and inscribed below ‘Olympic Games 1908’, measures overall 5.75” x 5” and is complete with a signed letter of provenance from a family descendant of Emil Voigt. Born in Manchester Emil Robert Voigt had won the 4 miles at the 1908 AAA Championships and on the strength of that performance was expected to win Gold for Great Britain in the 5 miles at the London 1908 Olympic Games. After two more successful athletic seasons, Voigt emigrated to Australia where he won further titles before retiring on the outbreak of World War One. He became one of the foremost pioneers of early radio, helping to set up 2KY (now Sky Sports Radio) under the ownership of the Labour Council of New South Wales. Voigt returned to England in 1936, before finally settling in Auckland, New Zealand in 1948, where he died at age 90 on 16th October 1973.
