Maritime an excessively rare handbill issued by the Crystal Palace advertising the exhibition of the ‘City of Ragusa’ c1870s – which was at that time the smallest vessel ever to cross the Atlantic and return unscathed. Printed on a leaf of paper approx. 22x14cm. Evidence of adhesive marks to left hand edge not affecting text. Paper somewhat flimsy. The ‘City of Ragusa’, a yacht of only 1 .75 tons, made her epic voyage in 1870, leaving Liverpool on June 3rd reaching New York on September 9th. It returned on May 23rd the following year, reaching Queenstown in Ireland on June 28th. The voyage became the talk of the age and as a result the vessel was displayed at the Crystal Palace as a tourist attraction.
