India and the Punjab – Maharajah Duleep Singh Memoirs. A superb deluxe edition in blue embossed and gilt of the Annexation of the Punjaub and the Maharajah Duleep Singh, 1882, by Major Evan Bell. Duleep Singh’s first major biography which he commissioned the professional agitator Bell to write. The book was a direct attack on the British Government and offended many of the high ranking officials, he later apologised and published the milder account titled ‘Duleep Singh & The Government’ to bring forth his financial and political case to the British public. The blue embossed copies were issued for personal friends and family only, and not available for general sale, this copy containing a detailed 10-page handwritten letter from Lord Hatherton to Sir John [Login] about the Maharajah’s case.
