India – Duleep Singh Description of a view of the valley and city of Cashmere, now…

India – Duleep Singh Description of a view of the valley and city of Cashmere, now exhibiting at the Panorama, Leicester Square, painted by the proprietor Robert Burford, from drawings taken in 1835 by G T Vigne, London 1849. Green paper wrappers, 15pp, 8vo. Extremely rare. Complete with the fold out view with key of the Panorama, which, amongst other aspects, shows ‘The present Maharazah Dhulip Singh [sic] on an Elephant’. At this time Duleep Singh was a child. The view also carries depictions of Sikh nobles and places of interest and noted western persons such as Baron Hugel and Captain Cunningham as well as Runjit Singh and an Akali priest. Burford’s Panorama in Leicester Square, London, was a considerable success, and ran for many years as one of the principal tourist attractions, featuring scenes painted by Burford himself, and based on his own drawings from life. The present pamphlet was issued to tourists who visited the exhibition of his panorama of the Cashmere Valley. It contains extensive explanatory notes on the various points in the scene. This is the first example of this pamphlet we have seen, and it is most likely that very few have survived over the years.
