English Civil War intriguing letter dated 1642 at the beginning of the Civil War, appearing to be written on behalf of several people and addressed to ‘your excellency’, pleading the cause of Sir Patrick Curwen of Workington, Cumbria who had been accused of endeavouring to raise forces for Parliament. The letter states that far from being in the Parliamentary camp, Curwen had called a Muster at Haverthwaite where he did his utmost to persuade those present to support the King. 1p folio, some erosion to left hand edge and with small hole affecting a couple of words, but otherwise clear and legible. With full transcript. From the papers of Sir Philip Musgrave of Eden Hall, Westmorland, Governor of Carlisle Castle and Sheriff. The letter was possibly addressed to him.
