Maritime the log of the Barque ‘Falcon’ travelling from Sunderland, via Portsmouth, to Cape Town in South Africa between April and July 1861, written in a neat legible hand on the pages of an officially published log book, approx. 43pp, original blue card covers, detached, pages a little loose and some dusting, portion of one leaf torn out affecting a few words but clearly legible throughout and appears complete, with loosely inserted printed map of the Island of Tenerife. It is not clear who has written this log, but the somewhat gossipy nature of the entries suggests that it was a passenger rather than a member of the crew. The author remarks on the activities of the captain and crew, noting their differing opinions on seamanship, and makes constant reference to the weather. He mentioned encounters with another vessel, and comments on the leisure activities of the crew, also commenting on the various sea life they encounter such as the flying fish. An interesting record of a voyage in the middle of the 19th c.
