Hampshire – Highclere – Cavendish family Archive of approx 18 letters sent between…

Hampshire – Highclere – Cavendish family Archive of approx 18 letters sent between various members of the Cavendish family regarding Lord Porchester’s Grand Tour to Europe, covering the period March 1821 to June 1822. Most are from Lord Porchester, heir to the Second Earl of Carnarvon and sent from Spain, Italy and France giving surprisingly mature insights of social history, politics and religious observances – he was just 20 years old at the time. The collection also includes several letters from his father, written from Highclere. A few of the letters show that they have been treated with immersion as a precaution against the spread of cholera or other endemic diseases at the time.
