Literature – Commonplace book a fine and unusual commonplace book of Eliza Gulston in…

Literature – Commonplace book a fine and unusual commonplace book of Eliza Gulston in which she has taken two volumes of A Collection of Poems by Several Hands, London 1755, mounted each page in two volumes of her commonplace book and then, on the adjoining pages has provided a vivid and sometimes extensive commentary on each poem, pointing out the significance of various passages, biographical notes on people mentioned in the poems etc etc. Her notes are written in a neat hand throughout – a true labour of literary love ! Original boards detached, but interior contents are in fine order. Bookplate of Eliza Gulston to each volume. It is not clear who Eliza Gulston was, but a woman of that name is cited as being the heir to Sir John Stepney and was of Llanelly, Carmarthenshire. She died, unmarried in 1857.
