British Fascists large poster, approx

British Fascists large poster, approx. 76x50cm advertising the British Fascists’ Grand Carnival Ball at the Palais de Danse, Hammersmith on Friday, March 6th 1925, printed in green and brown on a single sheet of paper in remarkably good condition. Of exceptional rarity – and indeed of great embarrassment to some of the high profile people who took part indicating their affinity at that time with the British Fascist Movement. Patrons recorded on the poster included: The Earl of Glasgow, Lord Ernest Hamilton, Sir Arthur Hardinge, Gerald Du Maurier and Lady Scott. But amongst the well known artistes who appeared and gave their support were: Noel Coward, Ivor Novello, Hermione Baddeley, Aubrey Smith, Ernest Thesiger and Hermione Baddeley and Charles Graves. The appearance of Coward is somewhat ironic, as his name appeared in the notorious Nazi ‘Black Book’ produced in advance of Hitler’s invasion of Britain, earmarking him for instant execution had Hitler’s invasion succeeded ! The compilation of such well known names shows how much Fascism was considered to be the political answer to the problems of post First World War Britain in the 1920s – one wonders how many of these people were able to acknowledge their open support for the Fascist movement when matters became serious in the following decade ! Together with promotional leaflet for the event and an envelope presumably used to send the poster.
