Shropshire – Whitchurch – Broadside announcing a meeting of the subscribers of the…

Shropshire – Whitchurch – Broadside announcing a meeting of the subscribers of the Sunday School appointing a committee to introduce Dr Andrew Bell’s new system of education of the poor and turn the Sunday School into a day school. Printed on a single leaf of paper, minor fraying to edges, one small section torn away but not affecting text, original folds but otherwise good. Approx 38x31cm. This was one of the first schools to establish the new system which became known as the ‘Monitorial System’ whereby older and pupils were given basic lessons by the school teacher and they in turn related the lessons to a small group of other children. By the time of Bell’s death in 1832 some 12,000 schools had adopted the system.
